Newsies Jr. was the very first show where I was part of the tech crew. I was super nervous at first because none of my friend group were interested in theater tech, so I didn’t really know anyone in the tech crew.
I tried to make myself useful and was quickly given more things to do. I started with basics. I painted some set pieces, helped set up some lights, and helped do scene changes and end-of-night cleanup.
One thing that really helped me was a mentor. A high school Junior, Cassie, pronounced me her favorite middle schooler and pretty much adopted me. I learned a ton and knew that I wanted to do more productions in the future. Cassie’s main focus was lighting, and by the end of the production, I knew I wanted more.
