My school was the host for this year’s drama festival. This meant that in addition to my duties for our production, I was also responsible for helping other schools get their lighting set up as they wanted.
“We are the Sea” is a historical drama that follows three young women fleeing the 19th-century Irish Famine aboard a crowded “coffin ship.” As they endure severe illness, grief, and a cruel sailor’s mistreatment, the passengers must rely on their shared memories and collective resilience to survive. All the while, the living ocean surrounding the vessel watches their suffering and ultimately demands justice for the tragedies it witnesses.
New England Drama Festival is a regional competition. We participated in the Rhode Island group, and were a top rated production.
The storyline moves between current events and a series of flashbacks. I really wanted the lighting to help the audience tell the two apart,
I was absolutely delighted when the judging panel awarded me the All State Technical Award for excellence in lighting design.
